What:
The Trail Blazers program is for teen youth looking to make a few extra dollars over the summer, while also learning the fundamentals of trail sustainability and maintenance. Teens will learn about I.M.B.A’s 5 Principles of Sustainable Trails and will be led by a knowledgeable trail maintenance coach. The program will also leverage youth to complete trail maintenance tasks critical to protecting the quality of the Slate Valley Trails network.
Why:
When teens experience trails and a connection to nature they are more likely to value it and care for it. Our local youth are incredibly fortunate to grow up in a community that has seemingly unlimited access to trails and private land. We want to make sure that we encourage them how, when, and where to take advantage of the opportunities we all share and enjoy in our backyard. Educating our local youth about trail maintenance projects and sustainable trail management practices will introduce them to trail stewardship and encourage future generations to care for the trails. This program is also offering a job opportunity for our teens and introducing them to trail building and maintenance as a viable career path. This program provides a safe environment to learn and grow future potential life skills as well as professional mentorship connections.
*Program Goals:
1. Engage and empower local youth through the teaching of basic trail maintenance skills
2. Install a sense of responsibility and respect for the trails, land, and natural resources
3. Create a summer job opportunity for local youth in a safe learning environment
4. Engage with the local community, focussing on our more underserved teen populations
