Slate Valley Trails had a summer to remember, hosting our two signature fundraising events—the 6th Annual Slate Valley Scramble and the 5th Annual Slate Valley Epic Mountain Bike Race. Both events brought record participation, outstanding performances, and an incredible display of community support. These events would not have been possible without our volunteer race directors, Owen Teetor, Andy Vermilyea, Zenon Stevenson, and Hillary Easter. We are so very thankful for the many hours they dedicated to these crucial fundraisers for SVT.
The 6th Annual Slate Valley Scramble
On August 9, 2025, runners gathered at the Fairgrounds Trailhead for the Scramble. Despite the heat, the energy was high, and we welcomed our largest field of participants yet in both the 8K and half marathon races.
In the 8K, Katie Preseau of Poultney, VT defended her 2024 title, finishing just shy of her own course record. Andrzej Prince of Sutton, VT was the top male finisher with a strong time of 41:58 on the challenging course.
The half marathon also saw repeat champions, with Caitlin Boufford of Londonderry, NH and Aaron Epps of Rutland, VT once again claiming the top spots, both posting impressive times in tough, hot conditions.
We are deeply grateful to every participant for bringing their energy, spirit, and joy to the event—you made the day unforgettable.
Special thanks to our Scramble donors and supporters:
- Trailheads, Porcupine Bikes, Skida VT, Bag Balm Vermont, and UnTapped for their raffle donations
- Stewart’s Shops for chocolate milk and Vermont Sweetwater Soda for finish-line refreshments
- Mahar Maple of Middletown Springs, VT for the celebratory syrup
- Arden Conine, SVT member, for crafting beautiful handmade mugs for the overall winners
And, of course, thank you to our amazing volunteers whose time and dedication make this event possible. We look forward to welcoming you back for the 2026 Scramble on August 8.
The 5th Annual Slate Valley Epic
On July 19, 2025, riders took to the Fairgrounds Trailhead for our annual mountain bike challenge—the Epic—and it lived up to its name. Perfect weather and meticulously prepared trails made for an unforgettable day, thanks to the hard work of our dedicated maintenance crew.
This year introduced a new relay format, allowing teams of two to split the 40+ mile course. The option was embraced by 17 teams, adding an exciting new dimension to the race.
By the numbers:
- 194 racers started
- 183 finished
- 93% completion rate on a course featuring 40+ miles and over 5,000 feet of climbing
The performances were nothing short of impressive, with the top three overall finishers completing the course in under 4 hours.
Overall Top 3 Finishers:
- Simon Phipps
- Cole Teranes
- Griffon Larson
Overall Top 3 Female Finishers:
- Amelia Circosta
- Liz Wolf
- Katherine Northcott
The Epic would not be the same without our sponsors. Frost Beerworks provided post-race refreshments, and Will Drucker of Split Spirits sponsored trailhead music by JD Tolstoi, creating a lively atmosphere for racers and spectators alike. Raffle prizes were generously donated by Santa Cruz Bikes and Lake St. Catherine Cottages, while Wells General Store fueled racers with their famous pickles. We also thank Porcupine Bikes, Analog Cycles, and our other business sponsors for their continued support.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the more than 40 volunteers who gave their time and energy to make the event possible. From registration to course marshaling to cheering on riders, your efforts are the backbone of this event.
Looking Ahead
Both the Scramble and the Epic highlight what makes the Slate Valley community so special: incredible trails, determined athletes, supportive businesses, and dedicated volunteers. These events not only celebrate endurance and outdoor recreation but also sustain SVT’s mission of building and maintaining trails that connect people with nature, health, and each other.
We can’t wait to see you on the trails and at next year’s events. Stay tuned for the 2026 dates!
