Service Requirement: 915 hours (half-time AmeriCorps)
Host Site: Slate Valley Trails, Poultney, VT
Supervisor: Courtney Behnken, Director of Operations
Program Overview
This position is part of the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board (VHCB) AmeriCorps program, a national service initiative that supports affordable housing and land conservation efforts across Vermont. AmeriCorps members serve with community-based nonprofit organizations to address local needs and strengthen communities.
About Slate Valley Trails
Founded in 2015, Slate Valley Trails (SVT) builds, maintains, and promotes foot and bicycle trails in southwestern Vermont. SVT manages over 50 miles of free, public trails in Poultney, Castleton, and Wells, made possible through partnerships with landowners, municipalities, and volunteers. SVT’s work supports outdoor recreation, community connection, and local economic vitality.
Position Summary
The Youth Programming Coordinator expands SVT’s capacity to deliver high-quality, trail-based recreation programs for youth in the Slate Valley. The member will design, lead, and coordinate biking and trail stewardship programs that build skills, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the outdoors.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead and support youth programs throughout spring, summer, and fall, including:
- Youth Mountain Bike Camp (ages 7–12; 4 weeks, summer)
- Teen Trail Blazers program focused on trail building and stewardship (ages 13–18; 2 weeks)
- After-School Bike Clubs at Poultney Elementary, Middle, and High Schools (spring)
- Periodic weekend drop-in bike skills clinics
- Support the local Vermont Youth Cycling League team (fall)
- Assist with outreach and communications to recruit youth and families
- Build partnerships with schools and community organizations
- Share program stories and updates through SVT’s digital and print channels
- Complete an AmeriCorps Independent Service Project
- Participate in VHCB AmeriCorps trainings, service days, and outreach activities
- Submit bi-weekly timesheets and complete required reports and evaluations
Additional Responsibilities
- Teach trail stewardship, outdoor ethics, and sustainable recreation practices
- Participate in disaster response efforts if requested and approved through AmeriCorps
Training & Requirements
- Attend required VHCB AmeriCorps and SerVermont trainings
- Complete Mandated Reporter and On3Learn trainings
- Training may not exceed 20% of total service hours
- Fundraising activities limited to 10% of service hours
- Some evening and weekend hours required
