What is Vermont Youth Cycling?
VTYC is a racing league that provides a safe and fun environment to get more kids on bikes. The league has grown steadily since its founding in 2018, and this year our local riders will have a team to join. The race season runs from August 22-Oct 18, with an optional scrimmage in May before the season starts. The race series consists of mostly XC races, with a couple enduro races. Practices for Taconic Cycling Club will start in July.
Who should join?
VTYC is for kids in grades 5-12. Novice riders all the way to experienced racers are encouraged to join. There are four race categories with corresponding race lengths, which vary slightly from course to course. Both the 5-6th grade category and Cat C (novice riders) race a 3-4 mile course. Cat B (intermediate riders) race 6-8 miles, and Cat A (advanced riders) race 9-12 miles. Riders may switch categories as they improve over the course of the season.
I want to join, but I canβt commit to every practice and race. Is this for me?
Yes! While VTYC is a competitive league, the main goal is to pass on a love of biking to as many kids as possible. In fact, you donβt even have to make it to every race to compete for the series podium!
Iβm in! What now?
If you are a rider in grades 5-12, you can head with your grownup to https://www.vtyouthcycling.org/, click the βregister for 2026β button and sign up for a VTYC membership under Taconic Cycling Club. A membership is not required, but the membership does include entry fees for all six races, a custom race plate (if registering before June 1) and comes with a VMBA membership! Membership scholarships are available. You should also encourage your grown up to register as a coach, which is free and a great way to support youth cycling in the community.
Can I get more information before I sign up?
Yes! Please join us for a general information session for prospective riders, coaches, and parents on May 13, 2026 from 6-8pm at Porcupine Bikes in Poultney. You can also reach out to [email protected] with any questions.
